On the situation in the RK UES as of 2022 January18

KEGOC reports that the situation in Kazakhstan's Unified Power System (UPS) remains extremely tense due to failures at power plants.

KEGOC, the System Operator of Kazakhstan's UPS, is taking measures to minimise the consequences of a declined generation and to prevent system failure.

On 18 January at 3:10 pm, Unit 2 at Ekibastuz GRES-2 power plant was shut down for an emergency repair. At the same time, emergency repairs continue for Unit 1 1at Ekibastuz GRES-2 and Unit 5 at Ekibastuz GRES-1 power plants.

The resulting significant decrease in generation has further aggravated the electricity and capacity deficit in the UPS of Kazakhstan. This situation could lead to unacceptable capacity deviations at the border with the Russian energy system, including overloading of interstate transmission and the threat of a system failure.

In accordance with Clause 32 of the Kazakhstan Unified Power System Emergency Prevention and Restoration Rules, load shedding for several large industrial consumers will be applied in the UPS of Kazakhstan as notified by the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan in accordance with a list agreed with the local executive authorities.

KEGOC facilities are operating in normal mode, with the National Power Grid equipment in full operation.
