KEGOC completed the implementation of Synchrophasor-based monitoring system (WAMS)

The regular meeting of the Managing Committee reviewed the results of the implementation of the first component of a large network digitalization project titled ‘Introduction of a monitoring and control system based on synchrophasor technologies (WAMS/WACS)’.

The WAMS system (Wide Area Monitoring System) provides synchronized time-stamped measurement data (including vector measurements). Archive capacity includes 50 measurements per second for 1 year and 10 measurements per second for 5 years.

E-terraPhasorPoint software package can quickly detect sources of adverse electromechanical fluctuations already at the stage of small disturbances. Thanks to this, decision-making process in a 24-hour operational dispatch control cycle could be optimized.

WAMS is based on up-to-date e-terraPhasorPoint software package and was put into trial operation in the Q1 2019. Over the past year it monitored the dynamic processes in the 500 kV North-East-South Electricity Transmission power system.

The WAMS architecture covers 14 facilities of North-South Kazakhstan electricity transmission line, including EGRES-1 power plant, 500 kV Shymkent and Zhambyl substations. They are equipped with PMUs, GPS clocks and switches to synchronize measurement data and send it to storage servers.

The received synchronized data from the WAMS system will be used to developed operation algorithms for the next project component - WAСS control system. The implementation of both systems will maximize the use of the capacity of electrical networks through the management in real time.
