KEGOC places green bonds totalling KZT 16.9 billion

KEGOC's green bonds were listed on the Kazakhstan Stock Exchange JSC (KASE) trading floor on March 30, 2023, with a total value of KZT 16.9 billion and an average weighted yield to maturity of 19.51% per annum.

The securities were placed as part of the second issue of bonds of the second bond programme of KEGOC with a maturity date of up to 2037. The 84.8% demand-to-offer ratio shows increased investor interest in KEGOC's green bonds. The investors were the Development Bank of Kazakhstan JSC and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

As part of the green bond issue KEGOC received an external assessment (Second Party Opinion) from the AIFC Green Finance Centre on compliance with the ICMA green bonds principles.

The raised funds will be used for funding the implementation of 'Rehabilitation of 220-500 kV OHTL at KEGOC branches' and 'West Kazakhstan Electricity Transmission Reinforcement Project. Construction of Power Grid Facilities’.

Rehabilitation of overhead transmission lines will ensure the reliability of the electrical network, optimize the cost of electricity for consumers, and enhance the operating efficiency of KEGOC. In addition, the construction of the new electric grid facilities will increase the reliability of electricity supply to consumers of Zone West of the Kazakhstan Unified Power System.

Also, the project has a social importance because it will create additional jobs for construction and installation period. This, in turn, will positively influence the development of the real economic sector, increase employment and the well-being of the population and increase tax payments to budgets.

KEGOC is the System Operator of the Unified Power System of Kazakhstan, and it owns and manages the assets of the national power grid (NPG). The company operates as the natural monopoly. It owns about 27,000 km of 220-1150 kV electricity transmission lines and 82 electrical substations with more 38.99 GVA of installed transformer capacity. These lines and substations form the NPG.
