KEGOC has begun work on the "South Kazakhstan Electricity Transmission Reinforcement Project." Construction of power grid facilities" and signed a mandate letter with the Asian Development Bank to finance this project. The document was signed by Mr. Shantanu Chakraborty, Director of Infrastructure Finance, Private Sector Operations of the Asian Development Bank, and Mr. Kanysh Moldabayev, the Chairman of the Management Board of KEGOC.
The investment project is being implemented as part of the order of Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, to reinforce the southern zone of the electric power system, develop interconnections between the Western regions and subsequent connection with the UPS of Kazakhstan.
"This project requires extensive modernization of the National Power Grid, which must be coordinated with the commissioning of new generating capacities, including renewable energy sources, and provide the necessary interregional interstate power flows," Kanysh Moldabayev said at the mandate letter signing ceremony.
The first stage of the project includes the construction of the new 500 kV Shu-Zhambyl and Zhambyl-Shymkent power transmission lines and rehabilitation and extension of three 500 kV Shymkent, Zhambyl, and Shu substations.
Financing ratio of the first stage of the project is expected to be 30% of equity funds and 70% of the borrowed funds. Implementation period: 2021-2027.
The project's implementation ensures the completion of the objective to "Increase the transmission capacity of the NPG of the Republic of Kazakhstan by building new electricity transmission lines and substations" in order to achieve one of KEGOC's three strategic development goals to "Ensure the reliable operation of Kazakhstan's UPS in the conditions of energy transition."
