KEGOC JSC presented the progress of South Kazakhstan Electricity Transmission Reinforcement Project at one of its key facilities – the Shu 500 kV substation in Zhambyl Region. This large-scale project has strategic importance: it is aimed at improving the reliability of power supply in the southern regions of the country, and preparing the infrastructure for the integration of new capacities, including renewable energy facilities.
Today, at the Shu 500 kV substation, site preparation works have been completed, receiving gantries for the connection of the new transmission line have been installed, four phases of 500 kV shunt reactors have been assembled, and the installation of modern switching equipment is underway. All works are being carried out strictly in accordance with the schedule and are expected to be completed by mid-2027, which is six months ahead of the original deadline.
The Project provides for the construction of a new 475 km Shu-Zhambyl-Shymkent transmission line and the expansion of the Shu, Zhambyl, and Shymkent substations. The total project cost amounts to KZT154.1 billion. Financing is secured through KEGOC’s own funds, as well as loan from the Asian Development Bank.
Particular attention in the project is given to supporting domestic manufactures: the share of local content reaches 67%. All design and construction works are carried out by Kazakhstani companies, while autotransformers, reactors, cable products, metal structures, and reinforced concrete elements are fully supplied by domestic plants. High-tech equipment such as circuit breakers, disconnectors, relay protection systems is procured from leading global companies including Siemens, GE Grid, Prysmian Group, and others.
KEGOC is working ahead of schedule, laying the foundation for the sustainable development of southern Kazakhstan. The implementation of the project will create a reliable energy framework for the Almaty, Zhambyl, Turkestan, Kyzylorda, and Zhetisu regions, as well as the city of Almaty. This will not only ensure uninterrupted power supply for consumers but also prepare the infrastructure for the integration of new generation facilities, including solar and wind power plants.
NB: KEGOC JSC performs the functions of the System Operator of the Unified Power System of the Republic of Kazakhstan and owns and operates the assets of the National Power Grid (NPG). The company’s core activities fall within the sphere of natural monopoly. KEGOC operates transmission lines with voltages ranging from 220 kV to 1150 kV, with a total length of about 28 thousand km, and 83 substations with a total installed transformer capacity of 38.9 GVA, which together form the NPG.
