Situation in Kazakhstan Unified Power System (UPS) as of 19 January 2022

KEGOC reports that the tense situation in the Unified Power System (UPS) of Kazakhstan is intensifying due to the failure of power units at the power plants of Pavlodar energy region.

On 19 January at 03:15, K-4 A facility at power unit No. 4 of Eurasian Energy Corporation (EEC) was shut down due to a failure. The night before, at 23:48, power unit No. 2 at Ekibastuzskaya GRES-1 power plant was also shut down due to a failure.

A day earlier, on 18 January 2022 at 15:07, power unit No. 2 at Ekibastuzskaya GRES-2 power plant was shut down due to a failure. The repair of power unit No. 1 at Ekibastuzskaya GRES-2 and power unit No. 5 at Ekibastuzskaya GRES-1 continues.

Due to the ongoing significant decline in generation, the UPS of Kazakhstan experiences the growing shortage of electricity and capacity. The current situation may lead to unacceptable capacity deviations at the border with the Russian energy system, and may overload interstate power lines and cause a system-wide failure.

To mitigate the consequences of the declining generation and prevent a system-wide failure in the UPS of Kazakhstan, in accordance clause 32 of the Kazakhstan Unified Power System Emergency Prevention and Restoration Rules, the load shedding will be applied in the UPS of Kazakhstan to several large industrial consumers. The Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan has been notified of the applied load shedding in accordance with the list agreed with local executive bodies.

The facilities of KEGOC are operating in the normal mode, the equipment of the National Electric Grid is in full operation.
