Project Goal: Strengthening the electricity supply system of the Southern Zone of the UPS of Kazakhstan to ensure the reliability of power supply for consumers and enhance electrical connectivity between regions.

Project implementation period: 2021-2027

Project Location: Almaty, Zhambyl, and Turkestan regions

Project Description: Strengthening the 500-220 kV network in the Almaty, Zhambyl, and Turkestan regions, as well as the construction of the 500 kV Shu-Zhambyl-Shymkent OHTL with a total length of 475 km, including the expansion of substations. The project includes the construction and rehabilitation of electricity network facilities:

-       construction of 500 kV Shu – Zhambyl OHTL - 300 km;

-       construction of 500 kV Zhambyl – Shymkent OHTL - 175 km;

-       reconstruction and expansion of 500 kV outdoor switchgear at 500 kV Shu SS;

-       rehabilitation and expansion of 500 kV Zhambyl SS;

-       rehabilitation of the 500 kV outdoor switchgear at the 500 kV Shymkent SS.

The project will allow:

-       to increase the throughput capacity of the existing 500 kV OHTL transit by 500 MW;

-       to ensure the possibility of isolated operation of the UPS of Kazakhstan from the Central Asia Power System during unbalanced operation in Central Asia;

-       to integrate RES into the UPS of Kazakhstan;

-       to connect the Southern regions via the 500 kV OHTL across Kazakhstan;

-       to connect additional consumers.

Current status:

• In September 2023, EPC contracts were signed for the development of design and estimate documentation (DED), construction and installation works, and supply of equipment.
• Positive conclusions have been received from RSE "Gosexpertiza" on the DED for the construction projects.
• Currently, construction and installation works are underway at all project sites.
