The aim of the Alma Electricity Transmission Project is to ensure security of electricity supply to Almaty region, deliver electricity from the first stage of the Balkhash thermal power plant (1320 MW) into the grid, and build up the technical potential for construction of satellite cities around Almaty, the Almaty industrial park, and provide connection terminal point for the North - East - South transmission project.

Phase II
Under the Project the construction of 500 kV YuKGRES - Alma OHTL is financed out of the IBRD loan proceeds based on the Loan Agreement dated 25 December 2010 between IBRD and KEGOC, amounting to USD 78 million, and provided under sovereign guarantee issued by the Government according to Decree No. 1375 dated 20 December 2010.

Stage I
- Construct 500/220/10 kV Alma SS;
- Extend and rehabilitate 500 kV OSG at 500/220/10 kV Almaty SS;
- Extend and rehabilitate 500 kV OSG at 500/220/35/6 kV YuKGRES SS;
- Construct 500 kV OHTL Almaty - Alma (63.4 km);
- Construct cross-connection lines for connection of 220 kV OHTL ACPP-3 – Shelek with 500 kV Alma SS (total length is 20.1 km);
- Construct cross-connection lines for connection of 220 kV OHTL ACPP-3 – Robot with 500 kV Alma SS (total length is 5.9 km)
Stage II
- Construct 500 kV OHTL YuKGRES - Alma (321.7 km).
Current status of the project:
Stage I
The state acceptance commission has issued the certificates and accepted the following project components:
- Construction of 500/220/10 kV Alma SS; the state acceptance certificate dated 11 July 2013;
- Extend and rehabilitate 500 kV OSG at 500/220/10 kV Almaty SS; the state acceptance certificate dated 5 September 2014;
- Extension of 500 kV YuKGRES; the state acceptance certificate dated 12 December 2013.
- 500 kV OHTL Almaty - Alma (63.4 km); the state acceptance certificate dated 26 April 2013;
- Cross-connection lines for connection of 220 kV ACPP-3 - Robot and ACPP-3 - Shelek with 500 kV Alma SS with total length of 25.942 km; the state acceptance certificate dated 26 April 2013.
Stage II
- Construction of 500 kV OHTL YuKGRES - Alma; the state acceptance certificate dated 27 February 2014.
